Twitter Discussion Differences

  • You have to click on the class hashtag in order to find all relevant posts to the class (and that's only if the user remembers to put it in the post)
  • The public can see everyones post that use the hashtag, as long as they aren't on private
  • Only given 140 characters
  • Notifies user when someone replies or reposts tweet
  • You can ♡ someones post if you find it interesting or just want to ♡ it

Blackboard Discussion Differences

  • Posts are located in the Discussion tab under the specific registered class
  • Must be registered in the class to see the discussion
  • Unlimited amount of characters
  • Not given any notification if someone replies to the post, you have to go back and keep checking
As for an in-class discussion, it you be a natural fluid conversation that would have more back and forth between the students. With the online discussion most students are only reading 2 of the other students posts because they have to respond to them to receive credit for class and homework. One of the best advantages of the online discussions is that there is everything is recorded and can be accessed at anytime. Whereas, in a class room there is no transcript of what was said work-for-word in the group discussion. Also, everyone has to participate in the online discussion in order to receive credit for class/homework. Some students choose not to participate at all in class due to shyness or laziness
