BLOG: Blog v Wiki

Both blogs and wikis are good sources of communication but they differ in the type of communication. In the article "How To Use Wikis for Business", by Ezra Goodnoe, Goodnoe says his opinion on what wikis are best used for. He writes, "Wikis are structurally capable of handling conversation, but it is not their forte; instead, wikis excel at collaboration". Wikis allow a group of people to go in and edit, add, and delete content in a specified domain. One of the things I like most is that the wiki keeps a log of all the editing and adding that each person does in the group.

As for blogs, it is more on a author/authors to audience type of communication. Only the authors of the blog can edit, add, and delete content. The audience only has the ability to comment which is more of a conversation then a collaboration. They cannot change the actual information on the blog, they can only add to it in a separate section. In the article "How can we measure the influence of the blogosphere?", by Kathy E. Gill, Gill explains different ways of measuring the influence of the blogosphere on public opinion and mass media. She writes, "Some blogs are single-person operations (one to many); others have a community of authors (many to many). They foster community and conversation by allowing readers to comment on postings". In order for there to be more of a collaboration there would have to be a few authors working on one piece, not a few authors creating their own pieces. Blogs allow for a dialogue and mostly just personal expressions. In order allow for collaboration the audience would have to have the ability to edit or add to the actual post.

I think a good possible use for a wiki would be for cooking and baking recipes. Recipes are often outdated and sometimes people find better or more efficient ways then what the recipe says. I think a wiki for this would allow people to add or edit the recipe to help others out. A lot of times when I'm baking I end up scrolling through all of the comments to see if people leave tips or suggestions. It would be nice if those tips and suggestions were left on the actual recipes.
